The Monsters in Fortnite! They're scary, funny and genuinely a blast to fight and it all starts with our go-to group of baddies...the Husks. I mean, these guys (and gals) have "hoodies" that just happen to be faces...FACES! And they can come at you in all the ways, from the old-fashioned full frontal assault, to a poisonous belch that puts my garlic breath to shame. There's even one "lovely lady" who throws flaming skulls at you. Whose skull? Who knows, but they are flaming skulls!

The Husks

Husks are monsters that used to be humans, who are now infected and wear their skin like "hoodies". There are a variety of Husks to encounter in Fortnite.

  • Husks (also known as Regular Husks). As the name suggest they are the most common type of husks and the first enemy the player has to defeat.
    • Husky Husk. They are a larger variant of the regular husks, easily identified by being fat versions of them. They take and deal more damage than the regular husks.
      • Propane husk. A sub-type of the husky husk. They always wear a red shirt and carry a propane tank on their shoulder, that they throw when close to their target, or explode in a suicide attack when they are about to die and there is a player close. The propane tank does damage in an area to everything: players, structures, and husks alike. This husks can do a massive amount of damage to structures due to the explosive damage of the propane tank easily destroying and weakening any close structure (including floor), so is better to watch out for them. The tank can be easily ignited if shot directly from a distance, which will then explode after a few seconds, killing the propane husk immediately. Beware, if the propane husk is killed without exploding the propane tank, it will fall on the floor and can still be exploded.
    • Beehive husk. A type of husk easily identified because they have a beehive stuck on their heads. This husk attacks mostly by using the bee clouds they produce, by walking or by blowing bees up to the player. Since the bee cloud can only damage the player, they are not a threat to buildings, but because it lingers for such a long time and because it limits visibility, this husk can be a huge threat to any and all players, specially the ninja class. The beehive on their head can be destroyed, which would make them into regular husk with a yellowish skin (likely bathed in honey).
    • Dwarf husk. This are smaller versions of the regular husk. They often target players, and can reach to them by jumping above an entire wall high. They also deal less damage than a regular husk but attacks and moves faster. They are very dangerous in large group because of their high potential in cornering a player. They look exactly the same as regular husk, but roughly half the size.
  • Pitchers. A type of husk that does damage from a moderate distance by throwing purple flaming bones in a straight line. Their projectile speed is slow, and they have a long wind-up, which makes avoiding their projectiles rather easy, but in large groups from different directions it can be hard to avoid them. Their bones can also damage structures. They are easily identified from regular husks because they wear baseball outfits.
  • Lobbers. A type of husk that does damage from a long distance, tossing flaming skulls in the air at its target in a similar fashion to a catapult (hence their name). This husks are a huge threat to objectives because they can easily decimate any ceiling structures if many of them are attacking and they are not dealt with, they can also hurt the player. They look like female versions of husks, always wearing a dress up to their knees.
    • Poison lobbers. This is a sub-type of the lobbers. They throw poisoned skulls that create poison clouds were they fall. Their projectiles and the poison cloud they create can only damage players, so they represent no threat to structures, but can be a huge annoyance for players. The only difference between lobbers and poison lobbers is that the latter has musky green smoke surrounding their heads.

The Mist Monsters

  • Smashers. Are tank like enemies whose purpose is to smash through a built fort's defenses to allow monsters access. They have high health and damage. Shooting them in their face can stun them momentarily, canceling their charge. They can be stopped by spike traps placed on the floor as they get stuck for a moment.
  • Soul Suckers. Are a flying unit in Fortnite. They will target a player from long range and rush them causing moderate to heavy damage. They also have the ability to open portals and slip through walls to reach players. They can be often found sleeping in maps, usually surrounded by other husks.
  • Blasters. Are tall, skinny Mist Monsters resembling purple Husks with glowing eyes. When at a moderate range they will begin shooting lasers at players causing moderate damage per shot, but multiple shots bring serious damage. It is important to note that they will always miss the first three shots, but will land the rest of the barrage perfectly. Stunning the Blaster via weapon impact or headshots will stop their barrage and force them to restart after a short duration. They can be often found sleeping in maps, usually surrounded by pitcher husks.
  • Flingers. Have one large arm and one smaller arm. Their objective is to throw husks in or onto a players fort in an attempt to deal moderate damage. They will spawn with smaller enemies which they can throw over fort walls to attack from the inside. They are highly resistant to ranged damage, but take increased damage from melee weapons.

Monsters

There are a few more enemies in the game that cannot be categorized in any of the above categories.

  • Trolls. They are small monsters that can appear from a wormhole when trying to grab a bluglo in the map. They steal the bluglo and the sidequest Whack-a-troll is activated, they will start to appear from one of many wormholes and they can also throw decoys and bombs (that damage the player if attacked), if killed they will release a gift that usually contains building material and 2 bluglo (the one they stole + an extra).
  • Mimics. Are monsters that are described as treasure chests. The mimic will take the appearance of a level 3 (blue) treasure chest. These can be identified before opening as the song they emit is different, they are often faced a peculiar way (as in towards a wall, and will wiggle when the player interacts with them). The chest itself can be broken to receive a small amount of loot. However, opening the chest and engaging the mimic allows the player to spawn treasure packages for all of the people on her or his team. They do moderate to extreme damage when engaged, can take a lot of hits, and.
  • Shielders. Also referred to as "Caspers" because they look like the cute little friendly ghosts, tag along behind and above a husk or mist monster to partially shield them from damage. If you see an enemy with a shield around it, look for the small purple blob above it to take down the shield.

Spawning

Monsters spawn in a myriad of ways throughout missions, these encounters are randomized across the map. Depending on the encounter it may differ in what fashion the spawning occurs.

  • Sleepers: these are packs of husks that lay dormant during the day and spawn in random locations around the map
  • Survivors: when encountering most survivors, they will trigger The Storm to spawn husks in waves
  • Encampments: an encampment will spawn with 3 to 4 sleepers surrounding it, attacking them will cause The Storm to summon more husks to defend the encampment.
  • Gateways: sometimes The Storm will bring forth a gateway. This structure is in the shape of a door and it will have husks coming out of them. In rare cases there will be more then one door and husks will travel from one door to the other.
